Rarest of the rare 2013 / El más raro de los raros 2013



The contest is here again in its 4th consecutiver year!.

This year 2013, the 22 sightings of rare birds in Spain which have been selected for the Rarest of the rare are:

C2. Sandhill Crane Grus canadensis  [ 1st or 2nd]
C3. North-African Blue Tit Cyanistes teneriffae ultramarinus  [ 1st for mainland]
C4. Short-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus griseus  [ 1st ]
C5. Thayer'sGull Larus thayeri  [ 1st ]
C6. Red-flanked Bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus  [ 6th ]
C7. Moussier's Redstart Phoenicurus moussieri  [ 8th ]
C8. Song Sparrow Melospiza melodia  [ 1st ]
C9. Brown-necked Raven Corvus ruficollis  [ 1st ]
C10. Horned Lark Eremophila alpestris   [ 5th ]
C11. Hybrid Hooded x Carrion Crow Corvus cornix x corone  [ 1st ]
C12. Cape Verde Shearwater Calonectris edwarsii  [ 3rd ]
C13. Swinhoe's Storm-Petrel Oceanodroma monorhis   [ 5th ]
C14. Grey-Headed Gull Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus  [ 3rd ]
C15. Pacific Swift Apus pacificus   [ 1st ]
C16. Forster's Tern Sterna forsteri  [ 6th ]
C17. Semipalmated Plover Charadrius semipalmatus   [ 5th ]
C18. Isabelline Wheatear Oenanthe isabellina [ 5th ]

C22. Bufflehead Bucephala albeola   [ 5th ]

Of the 22 candidates, 10 are 1st for the country and one for mainland Spain. Besides these, two 3rds and five 5th are the scarcest of the reported, with additional interesting two 6ths , one 8th and one 9th for Spain.

As shown above, there is a clear 2013 Mediterranean bias in the birds selected for the contest, but the Atlantic has provided very unique sightings too, both in the N and NW corners of the country and in the Canaries too.

[Ya está aquí el concurso anual del más raro de los raros en su cuarto año consecutivo. Las 22 citas seleccionadas son las que aparecen arriba y que podeis ver en detalle en esta página de este blog.

De los 22 candidatos, 10 son primeras citas para el país, con una más primera para la Península. Además de éstas, hay dos terceras citas, cinco quintas y dos sextas. Una octava y una novena completan el listado.

Como se observa en el mapa de arriba hay un cierto predominio de las citas mediterráneas en el 'más raro de los raros' pero el Atlántico ha producido citas impresionantes tanto en el norte y noroeste como en Canarias.
