Rare Birds in Spain Blog

  Spilopelia senegalensis , Eivissa, 17.3.2023 © Ricard Gutiérrez   On 17 March 2023, four adult Laughing Doves Spilopelia senegalensis were seen near Cal Guerxo, Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, Eivissa, Balearic Islands (Ricard Gutiérrez, Vanessa Cadenas, Ramón Ruiz-Jarillo, Diego García-Ferré, Balma Albalat, Santiago Palazón). Several photos were obtained and the list was uploaded to eBird. At least there were two different males and one confirmed female. We observed territorial behaviour between both males despite in a particular moment (photo above) all four birds shared a single almond-tree branch. No sign of captivity in the plumage of the birds was noted, with wings and tail in good condition (see enclosed photos). The habitat was a low density periurban area, which includes a school, a football court and a number of scattered houses sorrounded by Mediterranean dryland cultivations.  Birds were seen in close comparison to Collared Doves Streptopelia decaocto and apparen...

Este flujo era causado por la coincidencia de la época de migración de la especie con un fuerte temporal que nos produjo vientos del este, según el diagrama adjunto publicado en la entrada de hace dos años: Si la Península se encuentra entre un anticiclón en forma más o menos elíptica y una borrasca (en el norte de África), se dan las condiciones para el viento del Este (Levante). Ficedula albicollis ♂ 25.4.2013, Delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona © Mariano Cebolla Entre el 25.4 y finales de abril de 2013 se está produciendo una situación de temporal de levante en el NE Ibérico, con fuertes lluvias en la Comunidad Valenciana, Baleares y Catalunya.   Paralelamente, se han registrado números sin precedentes de aves orientales (ver análisis preliminar para Catalunya de ornitho.cat aquí ) aunque las cifras han sido mucho menores en las Baleares y no se han producido más al sur: por ejemplo, no se ha registrado, hasta el 29.4.2013, ningún papamoscas collarino en la Comunidad Valenciana y sólo uno en Mallorca. Aunque otras especies más corpulentas como el aguilucho papialbo ( Circus macrourus ) sí se han citado de forma algo más repartida. La llegada de Ficedula albicollis no tiene precedentes: se han recogido 16 citas entre el 25 y 29.4.2013 por 46 citas homologadas entre 1984 y 2010. Distribution map of Junco hyemalis in N America ( Source: Birds of North America online ) On 27.7.2011, Stephen Chorley, an UK based birder saw a Slate-coloured Junco ( Junco hyemalis ) in Mallorca. He posted a few days after this message to the rarebirdspain facebook page : Whilst visiting Mallorca last week I saw a Dark-eyed Junco, Junco hyemalis of the race Slate-coloured Junco. Seen on Wednesday, 27th July 2011, at 1330 adjacent to the last house and scrub land at the south end of Cala Morlanda, East Mallorca. Many other good birds seen whilst on the island but this was the one rarity worthy of mentioning, so that others might benefit from visiting this area. This bird is rare in the UK, so must be pushing the boundaries here.
