Dwarf Bittern @ Zaragoza, rarest of the rare 2019

Desde la edición anterior se ha establecido un nuevo sistema de votación para el concurso el más raro de los raros. Se ha podido votar via facebook y twitter a los 10 candidatos presentados en esta 10ª edición. Por primera vez ha ganado  un pájaro encontrado muerto.

Después de unos dias de votación y 224 votos contabilizados, el nuevo ‘más raro de los raros’ 2019 es el avetorillo plomizo Ixobrychus sturmii, primero para España peninsular después de las citas canarias, una de ellas con el ave aún en Fuerteventura. Encontrado en Zaragoza por Luis Palacio en octubre, esta cita ha obtenido un total de 65 votos (7 en twitter y 58 en facebook), el 29,01% de los emitidos.

Con 32 votos y el 14,28% de los votos, ha quedado el segundo clasificado, el alcaudón pardo Lanius cristatus , segundo para España, citado en Galicia y aún presente en enero 2020.

En tercer lugar ha quedado una ave anillada, el mosquitero boreal Phylloscopus borealis anillado en el delta de l'Ebre, Tarragona (30 votos, 13,39%).

Mientras que en facebook (158 votos, 70,54% de los emitidos) ganó de calle el avetorillo, en twitter, con 66 votos (29,46% de los emitidos) ganó la Motacilla flava oriental vista en Fuerteventura on once votos. Al sumar solo 6 más en facebook no llegó ni al tercer lugar siquiera.

Un año más, felicidades a todo el mundo y gracias por participar en este concurso único y original de rarebirdspain que sirve un poco para rememorar las efemèrides rarornitológicas más relevantes del año que nos ha dejado. Due to changes in blogger policy, this year follows 2018 rules of the rarest of the rare contest and continues the new voting mechanism through twitter and facebook. Voting has been possible choosing options in 3 poll tweets at (@rarebirdspain) and a poll at facebook (rarebirdspain group). a grand total of 224 votes have been collected sharing both social media results. 
For the 1st time ever a dead bird is the 'rarest of the rare'. It's the Dwarf Bittern collected at Zaragoza in autumn 2019 (Luís Palacios), 1st for mainland Spain. The bird collected 65 votes (7 from twitter and 58 from facebook), a 29,01% of the total number of votes.
2nd most voted bird was the Brown Shrike from Galicia, still present there in January 2020 which obtained  32 votes and the 14.28% of total votes.
The 3rd most voted bird was Arctic Warbler, ringed at Ebre delta, which was chosen by 30 voters, the 13,39% of the total.  Facebook has collected 158 votes (70.58% of total) and twitter had 66 votes, a 29.46% of total.

Ancient Murrelet (Synthliboramphus antiquus ), 1st for Spain, 3rd for the Western Palearctic

On 24 May 2023, Roland Bekkers, photographed an Ancient Murrelet ( Synthliboramphus antiquus) at the Odiel river mouth , an important wetland in the Huelva province, in the Atlantic coast of Andalucia, S Spain. At 20:22 the same day the news came out and were broadcasted within the Rarebirdspain group. Despite the rarity of the record, a number of local birders decided to give it a try on 25 May morning.  Local birders asked to respect local colonies of Little Terns Sternula albifrons and Collared Pratincoles Glareola pratincola remaining within marked paths in any attempt of twitching the murrelet.  On 25 May, at 10:37 AM the bird was relocated c.400m from the mouth of the Mazagón Marina (José Luís Anguita, Manuel Bárcenas, Juanjo Cirpriano, Alfonso Barragán), UTM 37.138718, -6.841995 . Grackles (Quiscalus) in the Iberian peninsula

Quiscalus mexicanus , Mexico, 31.8.2007 © Ricard Gutiérrez Grackles (genus Quiscalus ) are birds from Icteridae family, typical of Neotropical region, but also present in the Holartic, including USA coast. Typical 'resort' birds known by many as those 'black' birds frequenting the tables of hotels in the Caribbean or Mexican coasts trying to steal food from customer's breakfast or lunch.  Not a typical long-distance migrant group, they are believed to be quite intelligent, in a rather Corvidae mood, so despite they cannot be considered as true vagrants to the Palearctic according to the uncapability of crossing by themselves the Atlantic, it is true that they (presumably) board on ships to do the crossing. And not only one species but, at least, two having been recorded in Gibraltar and mainland Spain.  E-listed in Europe due to the 'current rules', a review of the treatment of what A listing means regarding 'clever' birds such as Corvidae
